Complex precipitation pathways in multicomponent alloys.
One usual way to strengthen a metal is to add alloying elements and to control the size and the density of the precipitates obtained. However, precipitation in multicomponent alloys can take complex pathways depending on the relative diffusivity of solute atoms and on the relative driving forces involved. In Al-Zr-Sc alloys, atomic simulations based on first-principle calculations combined with...
متن کاملEfficient Ab initio Modeling of Random Multicomponent Alloys.
We present in this Letter a novel small set of ordered structures (SSOS) method that allows extremely efficient ab initio modeling of random multicomponent alloys. Using inverse II-III spinel oxides and equiatomic quinary bcc (so-called high entropy) alloys as examples, we demonstrate that a SSOS can achieve the same accuracy as a large supercell or a well-converged cluster expansion, but with ...
متن کاملEffect of plastic deformation on anelastic mechanical losses in multicomponent substitutional austenitic alloys
Complex two-component peak of anelastic mechanical losses was observed in multicomponent substitutional austenitic alloys after prior plastic deformation. In AISI 316L, AISI 316LN, AISI 310 and AISI 304 austenitic stainless steels, this peak is situated in the wide range of temperature from 200 to 400K. Characteristics of the observed peak for different thermo-mechanical treatments were studied...
متن کاملMulticomponent and High Entropy Alloys
This paper describes some underlying principles of multicomponent and high entropy alloys, and gives some examples of these materials. Different types of multicomponent alloy and different methods of accessing multicomponent phase space are discussed. The alloys were manufactured by conventional and high speed solidification techniques, and their macroscopic, microscopic and nanoscale structure...
متن کاملCOMPUTER SIMULATION OF THE KINETICS OF ORDER-DISORDER AND PHASE SEPARATION DURING PRECIPITATION OF 6 ’ (A13Li) IN Al-L1 ALLOYS
A computer simulation study has been performed of the reaction paths for the precipitation of 6 ’ (Al?Li) ordered particles from a disordered matrix (z) in Al-Li alloys, using microscopic Lang&in diffusion equations. It is found that the precipitation of 6’ occurs either by a congruent ordering process followed by decomposition, or by a non-classical nucleation mechanism which requires critical...
